"Atlas, solarfountain"

The idea for the theme “Atlas” has its origins in Greek mythology. The Titan "Atlas" bears the majestic and monumental image of the sky. Furthermore, Atlas freezes to stone when he sees Medusa's head. These mythological models inspired an 8 meter high Larvicite column, which supports the roof of the school building and thus becomes a striking and historical symbol of the school.

The architecture of the school building impresses with a large amfi hall from which the classes, the library and the canteen can be reached. The idea of an “Agora”, a colonnaded hall as a central meeting point for social activities, also comes from Greek mythology. This idea is transformed in the inner hall of the Høvik School not only with a supporting and highly polished Larvikite column, but also the element water plays an essential role. The monumental column is not only visually in minds, but the water feature in the form of a light water flow along the column can also be heard inside the building. As the school's benchmark of being environmentally friendly and energy efficient, the water at the column is made to run by a solar pump. On the outer facade of Høvik School there are 7 effective solar panels, which are closed in a circle to form a sun symbol. The energy is directed from the outside to the inside, so that the "Atlas" inside reflects nature and time from outside.

The monumental sculpture with its watercourse distributes "drops of water" in the interior, which are also made of highly polished Larvikite. 3 drops are placed around the column at a distance to experience and linger. In order to visually lead the room to the "Atlas" and thus tell the story of the column, another water drop object is placed outside and with eye contact with the Atlas column. The interplay of nature and technology is combined with art to form a unity and accompanies the students on their educational journey.
