Three highly polished Larvikite sculptures define the outdoor area of the Åssiden School in Lier with their form and aesthetics.
An invitation to linger and use the functions at any time of the year. Stone for coolness in summer and warmth in winter - experience and memory as an
accompaniment to school time.
"Årstidene Skulpturer
“The Seasons Sculptures” consist of a summer sculpture, a winter sculpture and a spring/autumn sculpture. Like the seasons, the sculptures are intended to accompany students, teachers and visitors to the school throughout the year. The sculptures are reminiscent of islands, intended to convey a feeling of intimacy, warmth and relaxation. They communicate with each other, create attention, set characteristics and define spaces. In this context, they integrate into the overall architecture of the school complex and are arranged thematically. The idea of a “summer- and winter stone sculpture” automatically leads to a “spring- and autumn sculpture”. Spring and autumn are seasons of transition and transformation, so this sculpture is placed between the summer and winter sculptures and has a visible axis. Like a star, the shape points in all directions and forms the center of the sculpture series.
All three sculptures are made from blue Larvikite, with highly polished, inviting surfaces. The summer and winter sculptures are partially enclosed by an integrated wooden terrace/bench. The shape of the two sculptures defines their function. The summer stone, the largest and longest stone, reflects its surroundings and creates a visual focal point. The winter stone is placed in front of the main entrance and has the natural shape of a stone block. With its wooden frame, it serves as a seat and leaning object, as a heat cable inside can warm the stone in winter. This causes the snow to melt and the sculpture can be used to linger at any time of the year.

Heat cable through the stone to heat the stone.
The art object in front of the main entrance has a heating cable installed, and will feel warm to sit on even in many degrees of cold. This should make the sculpture an attractive place to stay also in the wintertime. The stone maintains a temperature of 25 degrees, which can be regulated using a thermostat. The Larvikite surface gives off even heat, so that the sculpture, as an island in the snow, can also be used as a dry meeting place. Since the sculpture object has an irregular format with raised sides, visitors can sit comfortably with their backs against the warm stone.
